Martha Welch is a native Vermonter and comes from a musical family. Her father played piano and her mother sang with her sisters on the radio for the Moxie company. Martha began classical piano lessons at the age of four. An interest in guitar followed and she was soon taking lessons. Singing was a natural part of her growing up, as well as performing in various bands and singing groups throughout high school and college.
As a member of an all-girl group at Simmons College, "The Second Circle," Martha sang and played guitar all around the Boston area. Never having given up Vermont ties, she received a degree in Elementary Education from the University of Vermont in Burlington, with music as her field of concentration.
Martha taught school for thirty-four years, the last two as an education technology specialist. She was one of the original members of "Satin and Steel," a local rock/jazz group, continued to play both piano and bass guitar in several other jazz and dixieland bands, and has been the "girl singer" in two local big bands.
Martha has had the honor of performing at many special occasions throughout Vermont, including Governor (and presidential primary candidate) Howard Dean's inaugural ball.
Although retired from teaching, she remains very active musically.
