Hank Vaughan is in his first year on the Castleton State College faculty as the College's new Associate Director of Bands.  He teaches World Music, Music Appreciation and Music Education courses at the college, and is also the Director of The Spartan Marching Band which will make its debut in the fall of 2009.  Before arriving at Castleton in the fall of 2008, he was the Athletic Band Director and Visiting Lecturer of Music at North Central College.

In addition to his responsibilities as the athletic band director at North Central College, Hank taught classes in advanced instrumental conducting and woodwind techniques as well as conducted the North Central College Concert Winds during spring term of 2008.

Hank has studied saxophone under Dr. Lawrence VanOyen and Dr. Eric Mandat, and conducting under Maestro Edward Benyas and Dr. Ramona Wis.  In his younger days, he was a member of the Brian Setzer Orchestra inspired ensemble, Big Swing Face where his mediocre vocal skills were featured and he also was a member of Southern Illinois University’s version of the 1 O’Clock Lab Band on bari sax.

Hank has been a guest clinician across the country, adjudicated honor band festival auditions in five states and presented a clinic on recruiting and retaining at the college level for the fifth annual CBDNA Collegiate Marching and Athletic Band Symposium in 2007.   In addition to his work with various schools teaching marching fundamentals and field conducting and writing field shows, Hank also worked with Downers Grove North High School's Trojan Marching Band as a drill instructor from 2001-2008.  While at Downers North, he wrote the marching drill for the band's opening day football game halftime performance at Ryan Field, home of the Northwestern University Wildcats.

Hank currently resides in Castleton, VT with his wife Becky and daughter Katharine.
