Paul Sutherland began his musical life playing the euphonium in the 5th grade in Brockton, Massachusetts. In the seventh grade he added trombone and played both through high school, but not at the same time. He studied privately with David Drapkin, the best Circus Band trombonist in the Northeast. What chops! After earning his degree in Psychology, Paul took a secret job with the U.S. Government. OK, it wasn’t a secret job, but that sure sounds good! Paul and his lovely and talented wife Ellen have been “Vermonters” since 1976 with Paul recently retiring from Government service after a 37 year career.

In addition to EnerJazz, Paul performs regularly with the Downtown Brass Company, The Castleton College Wind Ensemble and numerous pit bands for local musicals. In the past he has performed with the Marble City Swing Band, First Republic Brass, Rutland City Band, the Vermont Bi-Centennial Band, and the Proctor Elementary School Jazz Band (much to his children’s embarrassment). If he’s not blowing his horn, he’s probably on the golf course.
